On January 3, 2013, OICE received a respected guest, Yuhsun Edward Shih, Ph.D of Center for International Studies and Programs from the California State University, San Bernardino(CSUSB), together with his assistant Mr. Hou, a teacher from Xi'an Middle School. According to their visiting agenda, they discussed with Mr. Wang Xiufeng, Director of the OICE, about the cooperation and exchange program with Shaanxi University of Science and Technology(SUST).
Mr. Wang firstly extended warm welcome and heartfelt gratitude to our guests, and expressed great expectations of cooperating with CSUSB.
Then Mr. Shih gave a detailed introduction to the California State University system: "California State University, San Bernardino, also known as Cal State San Bernardino or CSUSB is a public university and one of the twenty three general campuses of the California State University system. The main campus sits on 441 acres (178 ha) in the suburban University District of San Bernardino, California, United States, with a branch campus of 40 acres (16 ha) in Palm Desert, California, opened in 1986. "
He said CSUSB provided nationally recognized degree programs of affordable education; it had easy access to faculty and emphasized on small class size; perspective students would have the ease of class selection compared to other universities, let alone the safe and convenient Southern California location with friendly and culturally diverse campus population. Thusly "in 2010, Cal State San Bernardino was named a 2011 Best College in the Western Region by The Princeton Review for the seventh straight year in a row, ranking CSUSB among the top 25 percent of universities across the nation. Founded in 1965, Cal State San Bernardino's enrollment annually tops 17,500."
CSUSB welcome Chinese students to study for bachelor, master or doctor's degrees, or to come as visiting scholars to explore and experience the wonderful campus life.
Mr. Wang continued the talk with earnest proposes. He said "going global" was becoming a national strategy for the development of modern education. In SUST, teachers and students are looking forward to cooperating and exchanging views with their counterparts in worldwide universities. In order to fulfill their expectations and also to meet the needs of international strategies of CSUSC and SUST, Mr. Wang listed three possible ways of cooperation: first, provide opportunities to those students who fail the national examination for postgraduate candidates; second, seek cooperation with Haojing College of SUST; third, start short-term programs for both teachers and students of SUST in the first stage..
In the end of the discussion, both sides spoke highly of this meeting: "we are not only getting fruitful achievement today, but also paving road for future cooperation programs."
Until now, the two universities are working on the cooperation memorandum. We are expecting our friend to visit again soon and we are looking forward to more new friends to cooperate with SUST.
